Philadelphia KiXX News Release
Philadelphia, PA, January 23, 2006 - The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that Philadelphia KiXX defender Drew Kopp has been named the League's Defensive Player-of-the-Week for the seven-day period ending January 22. The distinction is the first such honor for the Bridgeport, CT native in his professional indoor career and the third for the club this season; teammates Ptah Myers earned the Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors for the period ending November 13 and Peter Pappas was named the MISL Goalkeeper-of-the-Week for the period ending December 4.
The six-year veteran is enjoying arguably his most production season to date on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Following a strong defensive performance in Philadelphia's 8-5 victory in California on January 16, the club entered a home-and-home series versus the League-leading Milwaukee Wave without the services of both all-star defenders Pat Morris and Vlatko Andonovski. Kopp, who served as team captain in both contests, stepped up to the challenge, accounting for four of the team's nine goals in the series. The 29-year-old backliner first connected on three goals at the U.S. Cellular Arena on January 20 to mark the first hat trick of his indoor career, and then added a score in front of a season-high 8,074 patrons at the Wachovia Spectrum on January 21.
Kopp is currently tied with Goran Vasic atop the team's scoring list with 12 points on eight goals and four assists in 11 games. Those figures surpass his total production in 33 games last season and leave him four points shy of establishing a new career-high. The University of Pittsburgh product played forward and midfielder for the Panthers from 1995-98 and finished his collegiate career tied for fifth all-time in points. Kopp was also selected All-State as a senior a Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, PA.
Kopp and the rest of KiXX battle the Chicago Storm in a home-and-home series that commences at the Wachovia Spectrum on Saturday, January 28. The contest, which features a Mascot Game headlined by SocceRoo and the area's mascots, is scheduled to kick-off at 7:05 pm ET with doors opening at 6:00 pm ET. The series concludes at UIC Pavilion on Sunday, January 29 with a game-time of 5:00 pm ET.
