Dramatic Double-Play Leads to Bombers Victory in 2011 Home Finale

Dubois County Bombers News Release

August 4, 2011 - The Dubois County Bombers last game of the season was bittersweet for many people, but the team made sure they went out of League Stadium on a positive note. The Nashville Outlaws were in town, and the team effort from the home team was great, as they pulled out a 4-3 victory, ending the home season with back-to-back wins.

Sal Lisanti got his first win of the season Thursday night, something that he has deserved but that had eluded him until this game. Lisanti's 1-5 record has been partially due to a lack of run support, but against Nashville he pitched well enough that he didn't need a large amount of runs from the offense. In his eight innings of work, the Bryant University player struck out three and allowed just five hits and one earned run.

The offense got on the board early, as Danny Poma singled Anthony Aceto home in the bottom of the first inning. Nashville rebounded with two in the top of the second, but the Bombers would strike again in a big way in the sixth.

With runners on second and third, Manager Grant Bellak made a gutsy call that changed the game. With one of his best hitters up, Bellak called for a suicide squeeze from Kolin Conner. Conner laid down a perfect bunt, and by the time an Outlaw picked up the ball, Nick Stoia had already crossed the plate. The attempted throw to first to putout Conner went wide, and a heads-up baserunning play from Danny Poma gave Dubois County a 3-2 lead.

In the eighth inning, Kolin Conner gave the team the all-important fourth run with a deep sacrifice fly to center field that scored Poma yet again. Going into the final frame, the score was Dubois County 4, Nashville 2.

Closing pitcher Jake Rifkin came in for the final three outs, but Nashville wasn't going to go down easy. With one out, Cole Bieser, Tuck Willard, and Justin Guidry hit back-to-back-to-back singles and the bases were loaded. After a seven pitch walk to Doug Joyce, the league-leader in runs batted in, the deficit was cut to one.

To this point, Bombers second baseman Grant Zawadzki had not had a good game defensively. He's relatively new to the position, and he'd had three errors in the game. So when the Outlaws' Bruce Maxwell smashed a ground ball at him in the most important play of the game, the stadium went silent. It would have been easy for Zawadzki to lose his confidence, but he made a great play to his right and a good throw to shortstop Nick Stoia for the second out of the inning. Stoia then had to make a rushed throw to first, and first baseman Jamie Skagerlind scooped the ball out of the dirt to end the game on a dramatic double play and give the Bombers a win in their final home game of the summer.

The Bombers would like to thank everyone who has followed our team and supported us throughout the summer of 2011. We also would like to wish all of our players the best of luck in their upcoming year of college. A big thank you goes out to the players, staff, and most of all - the fans! It has been a great season, and we look forward to an even better summer next year!
