Paints' Lefty Clayton Schulz Signs with KC Royals Organization
August 4, 2011 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Chillicothe Paints News Release
On Tuesday, August 2, Chillicothe Paints' pitcher, Clayton Schulz received the phone call he was hoping and waiting for.
A scout from the Kansas City Royals was on the opposite end of the phone line telling Schulz he had a contract ready for the 6-2, 180 lb. lefthander to sign.
The good news capped another outstanding season for Schulz. In eight starts for Chillicothe this summer, he posted a 5-2 record with a very impressive 1.63 ERA. In 55.1 innings, he allowed just 10 earned runs on 43 hits (37 singles); only 12 walks and 49 strikeouts.
Schulz is a product of the University of North Florida where he is scheduled to be a senior this fall. He pitched for the Paints in 2009 when he was voted to the Prospect League All-Star team.
Last summer, Schulz gained national attention, but it wasn't on a baseball field. He was attacked by a shark in the waters off the Florida coast and required over 400 stitches in his foot. His injury drew the attention of the major TV networks and his interviews were watched my millions.
Schulz will report immediately to the Kansas City Rookie League team in Arizona. He is the eighth former Paints' player to sign a professional contract in the past three years since the team joined The Prospect League.
