Dubois County Bombers News Release

On Wednesday evening, the Dubois County Bombers took on the Hannibal Cavemen in a double-header at League Stadium. The Bombers dominated both games, but a poor seventh frame led to a Hannibal victory after extra innings in the first game, 6-5. The second game was all Dubois County as they strolled to a 9-0 win.

In the first affair, David Mueller got the start for the Bombers and pitched great. After giving up a run in the first inning, he rebounded and pitched five consecutive scoreless frames.

When the seventh and final regulation inning rolled around, the Bombers held a 5-1 lead. In the fourth inning, right fielder T.J. Thomas hit a two-run blast to give his team a 3-1 lead. In the sixth inning, the Bombers added more insurance when Jamie Skagerlind and Grant Zawadzki both scored on passed balls.

In the seventh, Mueller faced a tough situation with one out and the bases loaded. David succeeded in getting the Hannibal batter to hit a double-play ball, but the throw to second didn't find the second baseman's glove, and just like that the Cavemen were back in the ballgame. Unearned runs have plagued Dubois County all year, and this game was no different. Hannibal would go on to tie the game in the inning.

Following a scoreless eighth, Hannibal's Matt Burton led off the ninth with a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved Burton to second, and a fielder's choice advanced him to third. Then Michael Tucker came through with a timely hit, scoring Burton and giving Hannibal the victory.

Ryan Billo got the start in the second matchup, and for the second consecutive game, Grant Bellak didn't need to go to his bullpen. Billo lasted all seven innings, and was spectacular as he pitched a six-hit shutout. The offense gave him plenty of support, and the win takes Billo's record to 4-4.

The offense jumped on Hannibal early, with a four-run first inning. Then, with a three-run third, the Bombers were looking at a 7-0 lead. Kolin Conner added another run with a solo homer in the fourth. In the sixth, a sacrifice fly from Aric Marquardt gave the Bombers a 9-0 lead, which is how the game would end.

Anthony Aceto, Danny Poma, Kolin Conner, Jamie Skagerlind, and Jordan Eich all had multi-hit games in the second game. Skagerlind led the way with a 3-for-4 game and one RBI. Poma reached base on a pair of walks and went 2-for-2, raising his team-high batting average to .322.

The split takes Dubois County to 11-16 and Hannibal to 13-13 in the second half.
