San Francisco Dragons News Release
San Francisco - The Denver Outlaws make their second trip out West in as many years as they meet up with their conference rivals, the San Francisco Dragons at 1pm on Saturday June 23rd at Kezar Stadium. This will be the 2nd time that these two teams have met this season and the 6th time overall. The overall series record favors Denver 3-2, including a Denver win in the 2006 MLL Semi-Final Game.
The Dragons are hoping they can pick up their first home victory after falling last week in a close one to Los Angeles 14-13. Look for San Francisco's Ryan Powell to keep on scoring like he has in each of the four games this season, [now totaling _ points on _ goals and _ assists]. Eric Martin, last weeks Defensive Player of the Week will look to shut down the hot shooting Outlaws. The Dragons will try to give the Outlaws their third loss of the season, which would be the most losses in a season by Denver.
The second season of the San Francisco Dragons started off on the road in Denver May 19th. The Denver Outlaws came out ready to play. The Dragons wanted to get back what they thought should have been theirs as their 2006 season came to an end at the hands of the Outlaws. The game, which took place before the Collegiate Draft, was full of players with experience. Midfielder Tom Zummo's goal a minute into the game and attackman Ryan Powell's 8 point performance were not enough to prevent a Dragons' loss. The Outlaws responded to Zummo's opening goal with 5 unanswered goals. Denver goalie Trevor Tierney was outstanding in goal, stopping many quality shots and opportunities by the Dragons' offense.
Dragons vs. Outlaws in 2006:
In the first ever meeting of these two Western Conference Teams, The Outlaws came to San Francisco and left with a victory. The Dragons lost 15-11 in their inaugural season and home opener, with Jeff Sonke being named the Bud Light MVP of the game. This year Sonke has 11 goals and 16 points in four games. In the third game of the 2006 season on June 10th, 2006 San Francisco won a high scoring game at Invesco Field in front of a huge crowd. Taking the game 25-20, Ryan Powell was the MVP and the Dragons showed the MLL crowd that Denver could be stopped. The win broke Denver's 3 game win streak and undefeated season. June 24th brought the third game between these teams, in Denver. San Francisco once again proved they could beat the top dog, winning a close one 20-19. The Dragons were the only team to beat the Outlaws during the regular season, and both wins came on Denver's home field. The Dragons made the playoffs and met up with the Outlaws in the MLL Semi-Finals. San Francisco is looking to get revenge after losing in the playoffs 23-14. Denver went on to lose in the Championships to Philadelphia 23-12.
