Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Lake County Captains (affiliate of the Cleveland Indians) in the last game of a six-game series. The Dragons need a win today to earn a split in this series.
2021 Season Series: Lake County 3, Dayton 2.
Last Game: Saturday: Dayton 15, Lake County 4. Quin Cotton collected four hits including two home runs and drove in six runs to lead a 19-hit attack. Quincy McAfee reached base six times with three hits including two doubles, two walks, a hit batsman, three runs scored, and three RBI. Jacob Hurtubise had three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. The Dragons went 9 for 18 with men in scoring position and had 29 base runners in the game with 19 hits, six walks, three hit batsman, and one man reaching on an error. Starting pitcher Graham Ashcraft became the first Dayton pitcher to go seven innings in 2021, allowing just two hits and one run with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Milestones from Last Night: The Dragons 15-run total was their highest since 2015...the 19 hits were the most since 2018...The Dragons established 2021 highs for runs in an inning and hits in an inning with six runs and seven hits in the second...The Dragons surpassed their previous 2021 high for hits in a game (13) before the end of the third inning...The Dragons also set 2021 highs for most doubles (6) and extra base hits (8) in a game. Eight of nine starters had hits by the end of the second inning and all nine eventually collected at least one hit.
Player Notes
Quin Cotton became the first Dayton player to collect four hits in a game last night. He became the third Dragons player to hit two home runs in a game (joining Brian Rey and Alex McGarry) and his six RBI is a team season high.
Jacob Hurtubise is first in the High-A Central League in On-Base Percentage (.430). He is tied for sixth in runs scored. Hurtubise has 16 stolen bases on the year to rank fourth in the league and tied for seventh in all of Minor League Baseball (120 teams), four behind the national leader.
Francisco Urbaez over his last 11 games is 14 for 38 (.368) with two home runs. He has a seven-game hitting streak.
Reliever Braxton Roxby has not allowed a run in 11.1 innings, surrendering just three hits and six walks. He has struck out 18 of 47 batters faced.
Reliever Francis Peguero has allowed only one run in nine innings, allowing just five hits and two walks.
Dragons starting pitcher Lyon Richardson has posted a 1.33 ERA in his five starts, allowing just three earned runs in 20.1 innings.
Graham Ashcraft over his last two starts has allowed just one run in 12 innings. He ranks fifth in the league in strikeouts on the year.
Team Notes
Dayton begins the day in second place, one-half game behind West Michigan in the Central League East Division.
Dayton has held at least a share of first place after 20 of the 29 games they have played this season. The have not been lower than second place in the standings and have not been more than one and one-half games out of first at any time this season.
HITTING: The Dragons have scored 72 runs in their last 11 games, averaging 6.5 runs per game. This comes on the heels of averaging 2.8 runs per game over the 12 games entering the Quad Cities series on May 25 (17 runs in each six-game series vs. Lansing and South Bend), The Dragons averaged 6.7 runs per game in their first series of the year vs. Great Lakes.
The Dragons are second in the league in stolen bases with 51 and tied for sixth in all of Minor League Baseball (120 teams). They are on a pace for 211 in a 120 game season (the pace for a 140 game season would be 246). The club record for steals in a season is 228 in 2011 (140 games), when Billy Hamilton stole 103. They stole 120 bases in 140 games in 2019.
PITCHING: Dragons pitchers have allowed an opponent batting average of .214 (best in the league).
FIELDING: The Dragons committed have committed only 24 errors in 29 games, ranking first in the league in team fielding.
