
Dougherty Wins 2006 FedEx Coach of the Year

Philadelphia, PA (August 3, 2006) - Congratulations to Dan Dougherty and Courtney Harris who were named the 2006 FedEx Coaches of the Year. Each coach will be presented with a plaque and $500 for their outstanding coaching careers. The Barrage nominated coaches (one boys' sport and one girls' sport) from the following sports: Football, Soccer, Basketball, Lacrosse, Baseball, Softball and Field Hockey. Criteria to be named a finalist will be based on their coaching record for the year and their career record, they must have had an impact on the sport in the past year, how many years they have been involved with the sport and must be an active coach within the past 12 months. Finalists were announced and invited to the first five Barrage home games where they were presented with an official Barrage jacket. At the sixth and final home game, all finalists returned and the winners of the FedEx High School Coach of the Year were announced.
The FedEx Coach of the Year for a boy's sport is Dan Dougherty. Dan is the head varsity coach of the boy's basketball team at Episcopal Academy. Dan played for Doctor Jack Ramsey at St. Joe's University and was the captain of the first big five-championship basketball team. He is currently teaching math at Episcopal as well as coaching basketball and he has been doing so for the past 30 years. This past season, Dan led the team to a 27-4 season record and a perfect 10-0 in the Inter-Ac league. He also earned his 500th career win on January 17, 2006 and remains the city of Philadelphia's all-time winningest high school basketball coach. He has earned 12 league titles at Episcopal. He has over 700 wins as a high school and college coach and is a member of the PA Hall of Fame. Dan has one daughter and three sons who all excelled at sports. His oldest son, Dan, attended Wake Forest where he was a four-year starter on the football team. And, he briefly played in the NFL for the New York Giants. His middle son, Mike, attended Moravian College and was a four-year starter on the basketball team. His youngest son, Brian, attended the University of Maryland and was a four-year starting goalie on the lacrosse team. Brian currently plays professional lacrosse; he is a six time MLL all-star and is the starting goalie for the Barrage. Brian is looking to bring home another MLL Championship to Philadelphia. The FedEx Coach of the Year for a girl's sport is Courtney Harris. Courtney is the head coach of the varsity girl's basketball team at Coatesville High School. While she was there, she coached the 2006 Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year, Allyn Laughlin, who will be attending Florida State University in the fall to play basketball for the Seminoles. She is currently the assist woman's basketball coach at Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware. Please join the Barrage in congratulating Courtney for her accomplishments as a basketball coach. Congratulations Courtney!
Philadelphia begins their final two-game road trip of the regular season with their first stop in Rochester against the Rattlers on August 8. Face off is set for 2:00p.m. at Paetec Park. The regular season will wrap up against the Baltimore Bayhawks on August 12 at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Face off is set for 7:00 p.m. The 2006 MLL Championship Weekend begins August 25 at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, CA. Philadelphia, Denver and Boston have all clinched playoff spots.
