San Francisco looks for playoff clinch, revenge against LA

San Francisco Dragons News Release

San Francisco, CA - With the San Francisco Giants scuffling their way out of a 10 game losing streak, its seems more and more likely that San Franciscans will only have one home team to root for in the playoffs this summer.

That team is the San Francisco Dragons (6-4) of Major League Lacrosse, who if victorious over the Los Angeles Riptide (5-5) this Saturday, would clinch a playoff berth in their first season of existence.

"Los Angeles has a talented team and have played very well of late" said Dragons GM Doug Locker, "I'm sure that our players will come to play this Saturday, especially after what happened here two weeks ago. It should be a great game".

The Riptide defeated the Dragons 17-10 on July 22nd in Los Angeles and then completed the weekend sweep on Sunday July 23rd at Kezar Stadium 15-11.

San Francisco can end the playoff race with a victory and move on to its first New Balance Championship Weekend appearance later this month at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. A loss would take the playoff race out of the hands of the Dragons; San Francisco would then need a win next weekend against Chicago and a win by Denver who is playing at Los Angeles.

"We would much rather control the outcome of the playoff race ourselves and get the win this weekend" remarked Locker.

The Dragons are coming off a big win over the Rochester Rattlers in Rochester last Saturday night, in which they spoiled the Rattlers perfect record at their new home, PAETEC Park. The win in Rochester severely damaged the Rattlers playoff chances, and all but mathematically eliminated Rochester from contention. The game was punctuated with rough play throughout as the two teams combined for 24 penalty minutes.

This weekend's game against the Riptide is the final meeting between San Francisco and Los Angeles. San Francisco will return to action next weekend versus the Chicago Machine for their regular season finale at Kezar Stadium on Saturday August 12th at 1pm.

New Balance Championship Weekend Semifinals - August 25th at 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Championship Game - August 27th at 2:00 p.m.
