
Doubledays Avoid Sweep

NORWICH- Auburn Doubledays (18-9) LHP Blake Monar (2-2) pitched six innings, gave up three hits and a walk and struck out five to lead his team to a 5-1 win over the Connecticut Tigers (10-18) before 717 fans on Monday night at Dodd Stadium.
Connecticut LHP Hua-Wei Lo gave up his first run in a Tigers uniform in the first inning on a two-out RBI double by DH Carlos Lopez (1-4). The lead-off hitter, CF Wes Schill (1-4), scored on the play after hitting a single and stealing second and third bases. The Doubledays took an early 1-0 lead.
Auburn added two runs to its lead in the third inning to go ahead 3-0. Schill reached base again on a fielder's choice and came home on a two-run homerun to left field by 3B Khayyan Norfork (1-4), his first of the season.
A sacrifice fly to right field by Schill in the fifth inning gave Auburn a 4-0 lead. The hit scored SS James Brooks (1-4) from third after he doubled off the left field wall and went to third on a sacrifice bunt.
The lead increased to 5-0 in the sixth inning.
After LF Jordan Poole (1-4) hit a two-out double, RF Wander Ramos (1-4) knocked him in on a double to right center.
The Tigers ended Auburn's shut out effort in the eighth inning by scoring a run off of right hand reliever Jason Smith. C Bennett Pickar (1-1) led off the inning with a double. CF Jake Stewart (1-4) hit a one-out single to move Pickar to third base and SS Jared Reaves (3-4) followed with an RBI single to narrow the Doubledays lead to 5-1.
The Vermont Lake Monsters come to town for a two-game series starting Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Dodd Stadium. Hot dogs will be sold for one dollar at the concession stands during the game, sponsored by Kayem Franks. RHP Montreal Robertson (0-3, 4.74) takes the mound for the Tigers, looking for his first win of the season. He will face off against Vermont LHP Brent Powers (0-2, 5.60). The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League.
