Doris Rubel receives WHL Distinguished Service Award

December 3, 2004 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Calgary, AB - Ron Robison, Commissioner of the Western Hockey League announced today that long-time Kamloops Billet Coordinator Doris Rubel is the first recipient of the WHL's new Distinguished Service Award.

The WHL Distinguished Service Award, introduced for the first time this season by the WHL, is presented annually to an individual associated with the WHL who has made an extraordinary contribution over an extended period of time at the WHL Club or League level.

Doris first became involved as a billet coordinator for Kamloops players 38 years ago and has worked closely with every incarnation of junior hockey in Kamloops including the Kraft Kings, Braves, Rockets, Chiefs, Junior Oilers, and Blazers. Doris will be retiring at the end of the 2004-05 season.

Through her unfaltering dedication and love of the game, she has helped hundreds of young men become role models in their respective communities. Her home is a testimonial to those young players with the many photographs, cards, and memorabilia she has received from them over the years.

In fact, many players still send her cards and visit whenever they are in the Kamloops area.

The countless hours she has spent over the years doing such important work makes Doris Rubel an outstanding recipient of the WHL's Distinguished Service Award.

WHL Commissioner Ron Robison will be in Kamloops on Wednesday, December 8th to present Doris with the award in a ceremony prior to the Blazers-Seattle Thunderbirds game.
