Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
LUBBOCK --- The Lubbock Renegades, known more for its offense than defense, limited the Rio Grande Valley Dorados production in a 48-20 win Saturday at City Bank Coliseum in Lubbock.
The sixth-ranked Renegades (7-2) snap the two-game winning streak of the Dorados (4-5), who fall back under .500. The Dorados are now 2-4 on the road this season.
Rio jumped to a 14-0 lead after first quarter TDs from Pierre Thomas and Robert May. From there, Lubbock posted 35 unanswered points en route to the win.
Lubbock tied the game on a controversial play early in the second quarter. Corey White was credited with a 17-yard TD reception despite protests by Rio DB's that the ball hit the turf. Replay on arena video boards clearly showed the ball hitting the ground before White controlled it and stumbled into the end zone.
The Dorados pressured deep in Lubbock territory on three occasions, only to turn the ball over on a pair of interceptions and a fumble. With the score tied 14-14, Rio QB Travis Cole fumbled at the Lubbock 2-yard line.
The Renegades responded with an eight-play drive to take a 21-14 lead with 2:52 left in the second quarter.
On the ensuing Rio possession, Cole led the Dorados to the Lubbock 15-yard line only to have Kendrick Walker pull home the first of his two interceptions.
Lubbock's Virgil Gray caught a 24-yard TD reception on the opening possession of the second half to take a 28-14 lead. Cole again moved Rio deep into Renegades territory on the following drive, only to see Walker respond with his second pick of the night.
Cole finished 20-42-3, throwing for 201 yards and three TDs. The 20 point output for Rio was the lowest since a 56-14 loss to Oklahoma City on Jun 24, 2006.
RGV returns to Dodge Arena next week where it will play host to Texas at 7:35 p.m. Saturday. The first 1000 fans receive Dorados visors courtesy Fox Rio 2 and San Juan Pharmacy.
