Dogs Win Game 3, Take Series Lead

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - The Hamilton Bulldogs wrestled home ice advantage away from the Abbotsford Heat in their North Division final series by posting a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night in the Fraser Valley.

Jon Rheault opened scoring for the Heat n the power play at 5:48 of the first period. The speedy Heat forward jumped on a juicy rebound at the side of the Bulldog goal and fired it behind goaltender Cedrick Desjardins. It was Rheault's sixth goal in 10 Calder Cup games this season.

The Bulldogs responded with a power play goal of their own at 11:53 of the first. Andre Benoit's point shot eluded a screened David Shantz, in the Abbotsford goal, to even the score 1-1.

The Heat regained the lead with their second power play goal of the game at 15:15 f the first period. Brett Sutter batted in his fourth goal of the playoffs while getting knocked down in front of the Hamilton goal. Sutter's fourth goal of the playoffs gave the Heat a 2-1 lead after one period of play.

The teams traded excellent scoring chances in a wide-open, hard-hitting second period but it was the Bulldogs who would capitalize on the power play at 16:49. Gabriel Dumont scored his first goal of the series, banging in a loose puck on the Bulldogs power play to tie the game 2-2.

The Bulldogs then took their first lead of the game with 1:06 remaining in the second. Olivier Fortier scored his first AHL goal as he drove the Heat net and had a centering pass bounce in off his body. The Bulldogs would have their first lead of the night and take a 3-2 lead to the final period.

The Heat out-shot and out-chanced the ‘Dogs in the third but could not solve Desjardins or the Bulldogs as the Dogs clogged their zone and locked down the Heat.

The Bulldogs now have a 2-1 series lead and have regained home ice advantage in this North Division Final.

The same two teams will face off Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre for Game 4 of the series.
