Richmond RiverDogs News Release

Richmond, VA - The RiverDogs' staff and mascot Razz will be on hand at the 22nd Annual Carytown Watermelon Festival this Sunday, August 14th, handing out free tickets, signing autographs, and providing games for fans. Defenseman Brian Goudie is also scheduled to appear.

The popular event, brought to people by the Carytown Retail Merchants Association and Ukrop's, signifies the coming of the end of summer as stores clean out their seasonal stock at low prices and visitors can enjoy some terrific fruit.

"I think it's great that we get out in the community, and we're really looking forward to the event," said Head Coach and General Manager Robbie S. Nichols. "It is very important for our organization to get out, meet people, and build awareness to others who may not be too familiar with RiverDogs hockey so we can interest them in coming to games. I just hope we can make it through the whole day, if we can stand this Richmond heat!"

The festival runs from 10 am to 6 pm, and more than 100,000 people are expected throughout the day. Located in Richmond between Colonial Avenue and Nansemond Street on W. Cary Street, the event is free to the public. All ages are welcome, and watermelon sales go to charity to benefit children's hospitals across the country. This is the largest one-day musical event held in Richmond, with roughly 120 musical performances scheduled on 10 stages. Mechanical rides, face-painting, and balloon designs are among other activities that will be taking place.

Parking is available at the parking decks on Colonial and Sheppard or on side streets and the Boulevard.

Richmond opens its exhibition season on October 14th with back-to-back games against new rival Roanoke. The battles, taking place in the 700-seat Skate Nation on the 14th and 15th, are being tabbed as the "Battle on Broad Street!" The regular season commences on Friday, October 21st, hosting the Adirondack Frostbite at the Richmond Coliseum. Tickets for all RiverDogs home games are available at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Richmond Coliseum Box Office. Tickets can be charged by phone through Ticketmaster at 804-262-8100 or can be purchased at the arena at 601 E. Leigh St. Season tickets, FlexPaks, birthday parties and group packages are available through the RiverDogs' office. For more information on tickets or upcoming games, please call our office at 804-225-PUCK (7825).
