Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
EDINBURG, TX - After enduring a disastrous fifth inning, the Prairie Dogs fell 12-6 in game one of four-game series in Edinburg.
The Dogs racked up three runs in the top of the fourth. Nick Ochoa and Zach Welch collected R.B.I. singles and Case Rigby scored on a wild pitch to give Abilene a 3-1 lead. However, after Joe Weik launched his league-leading seventh home run in the top of the fifth to create a 5-1 Abilene advantage, the flood gates opened.
Brian Smith was cruising along through four innings in his seventh start of the season, and things seemed just fine as he began bottom of the fifth by forcing Pascuel Del Real to fly out to centerfield. However the next six batters recorded base hits against the young lefty, and the last knock, a two-run double from Osiel Flores, marked the end of Smith's night. He departed after 4.1 innings and allowed seven runs (six earned).
Gunner Glad trotted out of the bullpen to put a stop to the hit barrage, however, he was touched for a pair of unearned runs before finally brining the eight-run inning to an end. The bottom of the fifth included seven Edinburg hits and three Abilene errors. As the game moved to the sixth inning, the Roadrunners led 9-5.
Edinburg tacked on three more tallies in the seventh, highlighted by an Eric Bloom two-run double.
Matison Smith recorded the victory for the home team after tossing six innings and allowing five runs on six hits.
Joe Weik pocketed his third hit and third R.B.I. with a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth.
The Dogs return to Edinburg Stadium for game two of the four-game series on Thursday night. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the pregame show at 6:55.
