Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
EDENTON, N.C. - Fayetteville SwampDogs pitchers issued nine walks in the contest, and the club fell to the Edenton Steamers 6-4 Wednesday night at Historic Hicks Field.
Steamers starter Jacob Banks was spectacular on the mound, recording 11 strikeouts in his five innings of work, though he did surrender a pair of runs. The first of which came courtesy of an Austin Upshaw (Fr./Kennesaw State) single which scored Mike Deese (Jr./The Citadel) in the second inning. The other run scored off a solo home run from Tanner Woods (Soph./Chowan) in the fourth.
The 'Dogs (0-2) plated two more in the sixth inning against reliever Joe Rocchetti after Alex Liquori (Jr./Kennesaw State) doubled with one out, then Bligh Madris (Fr./Colorado Mesa) was hit by a pitch. Two wild pitches and a Woods groundout later, the score was tied at 4-4.
The Steamers (2-0) answered back in the bottom half of the inning, as Blake Brunneman (Soph./North Lake) walked Destin Nichols and two batters later, John Willis doubled him home to make it 5-4 Steamers.
A sacrifice fly from Willis would give the Steamers an insurance run in the eighth inning.
Rocchetti got the win, improving to 1-0 on the season, and Brunneman was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-1. Matthew Festa was credited with the save (1). The SwampDogs are back in action tomorrow night as they take on the Forest City Owls at 7:05 pm at "The Swamp" on Hawaiian Luau Night. To reserve your seats now, call the SwampDogs at 910-426-5900.
The Fayetteville SwampDogs are in their 15th season playing in the Coastal Plain League. The SwampDogs are one of the most successful franchises in the league's history, making the Petitt Cup Playoffs eight times in the past 10 seasons, reaching the championship round three times. The SwampDogs boast 84 alumni taken in the draft and have produced six players who have gone on to play in Major League Baseball.
