Dogs fall 4-1 in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX - It's not a good time to face the San Angelo Colts, just as the Prairie Dogs. For the second consecutive night, the San Angelo pitching staff overwhelmed the Dogs offense, defeating Abilene 4-1 at Foster Field.

Kyle Boggio, making just his second start of the season, followed Brian Henschel's lead from Monday night. Boggio, a lefty from Santa Clarita, CA, spun a beauty against the Dogs, lasting six innings, yielding only three hits, and fanning five batters en route to his first win of the season.

Eddie Browne grounded out to end the top of the third inning against Boggio, marking the third consecutive perfect inning for the lefty and the 28th consecutive batter retired by Colts pitchers in the series.

San Angelo scored the first run of the game when Jamar Walton knocked in his 31st run of the season with a single to left in the bottom of the second inning.

In his 12th start of the season, Woods Fines was solid over six innings, allowing only four hits and three runs (one earned). However, a devastating sequence of events unfolded in the bottom of the sixth. With the Colts leading 1-0 and the bases loaded with two outs, catcher Chris Caves fired down to third base in an attempt to pickoff Ronnie Gaines. But Wilson Batista was not covering the base and the ball sailed down the left field line, allowing two runs to score. Fines went on to retire Jamar Walton and strand the remaining runner on second base, but the Colts had already widened the lead to 3-0 as the game moved toward the seventh inning.

Abilene's best opportunity emerged in the top of the eighth. With two outs and the bases clear, Eddie Brown, Jason Martin, and Adam De La Garza strung together three consecutive singles off of Michael Hacker, loading the bases for Wilson Batista. The switch hitter lined a bullet to left but, it was directly at Walton for the final out of the inning.

Reece McGraw made his professional debut for Abilene in the eighth inning, and the side- winding righty gave up a run on three hits before collecting his first professional strikeout to end the eighth.

Trailing 4-0, the Dogs scratched out a run against Colts' closer Erik Draxton when Chris Caves blasted a double to left-center field to score Joe Weik with two outs in the ninth.

Abilene returns to San Angelo on Wednesday night for the third of an eight-game series. The game will be broadcast live on 106.9 KLGD and on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
