Indianapolis, March 18--Hitting free throws when they had to helped the Detroit Dogs to their third win over the Indiana Legends 109-104 Monday night in American Basketball Association (ABA) action.
Todd Burgan tied the game at 90-all with a pair from the stripe with 7:25 to play then followed with two more at 7:07 to give the Dogs a lead they would never relinquish. Derrick Zeigler hit another pair at 1:28 to put the visitors up 108-102. Cory Tarrant hit the first of two at :44.1 to put the game out of reach at 109-102.
With leading scorer Shea Seals gone to France, the Legends relied on the scoring of Coleco Buie with 27, Michael Hart with 23 and Willie Ladson with 22 to try to keep up but the only other Legend who could manage to score in double digits was Dwayne Morton with 15. Hart was the surprising leader in rebounds for the hosts with 10, seven on the defensive end. Greg Grant led the Dogs with 11.
The game marked the professional debut of Steve Helm, an Indianapolis Northwest High School graduate who contributed two points, two rebounds and two assists in 18 minutes of action. The Legends host Southern California Tuesday at 7:30 at Arlington High School. Detroit hosts Kentucky Wednesday.
