Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
LEOMINSTER, Mass. (Thursday, July 18, 2013). Tyler McVicar's (Elon) RBI sac fly in the bottom of the ninth proved to be the difference as the Dirt Dawgs rallied to a walk off victory over the North Shore Navigators 8-7.
"That was a total team effort tonight," said Scott Lettre, Director of Baseball Operations for the Dirt Dawgs. "We were down three runs twice in the game, but never gave up and rallied to win. The team showed a lot heart tonight."
Rob Bertucci (MIT) pitched a flawless four innings in relief to keep Wachusett in the game. He scattered four hits and struck out four. For his work, Bertucci earned the win to move to 1-1.
The Dirt Dawgs started off the ninth by loading the bases with no outs. Derek Lowe (William & Mary) then plated the tying run on a fielder's choice, paving the way for McVicar's walk off.
The Navigators (15-17) jumped out on the board first, scoring three runs in the top of the second.
However, the Dirt Dawgs (15-18) wasted no time to get the bats going, plating four of their own in the second to take a 4-3 lead. Tyler McVicar (Elon), Billy Wright (Judson), and Austin Sistrunk (Lipscomb) all had RBIs in the frame.
Unfortunately the Dawgs were unable to hold the lead, as the Navigators added another three runs in the third for a 6-4 lead. They enhanced the lead in fourth on an RBI single by Derek Hirsch (St. Thomas Aquinas).
The Dirt Dawgs threatened in the seventh, starting off the inning with three straight infield singles. Derek Lowe (William & Mary) took advantage of the bases loaded opportunity with a two-run single, cutting the lead to 7-6.
The rally was cut short though, thanks to a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play by North Shore.
Ryan Grant (Wheaton) took the loss for the Navigators, moving to 1-1 on the season.
North Shore starting pitcher Justin Davis (Pepperdine) took a no decision, keeping his record at 4-0. He went five innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out four.
David Montiverdi (Dowling) also earned a no decision for the Dirt Dawgs; he went five full, allowing seven runs on nine hits. Montiverdi stayed at 2-0 on the season.
Before the game got underway, the fans at historic Doyle Field were treated to a rousing National Anthem from the Boston Bruins' Rene Rancourt. In addition, Miss Massachusetts, Sarah Kidd, was on hand to throw out the first pitch.
The Dirt Dawgs return to action tomorrow, as the Seacoast Mavericks visit Doyle Field. First pitch is at 6:35 PM.
