Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
LEOMINSTER, Mass. - The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs fell to the Martha's Vineyard Sharks 8-4 in the Dirt Dawgs' 2013 FCBL home opener at Doyle Field.
The fans were treated to a tight contest as Wachusett started strong and held a 2-1 lead after five innings. Unfortunately, the Dirt Dawgs defense was not up to par as defensive mistakes allowed the Sharks to score 7 runs in the final 3 innings.
"The game was very close until late," said Scott Lettre, Director of Baseball Operations for the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs. "I thought we started strong and the game was entertaining for the fans thanks to all the long balls.
"It's unfortunate we weren't able to pull this one out, but the season is still early. We are excited to see what our team can do this summer."
The Sharks (1-0) were led on offensive by Nik Campero (UMass Amherst), who went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs to fuel the sharks at the dish.
Jon Dunn (Le Moyne) was the winning pitcher for the Sharks, pitching the final 3 frames, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits.
For the Dirt Dawgs (1-1), leadoff hitter Jamill Moquete (UMass Boston) continued his hot start to the season; recording 2 hits on the night-a double and a solo homerun to left.
Tyler Mikrut (Southeast Missouri State) had a big night for the Dirt Dawgs, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Mikrut hit a solo shot over the center field sign to give the Dirt Dawgs a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Wachusett starting pitcher Kyle Zaorski (IUP) went five strong innings, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits. The lefty had 7 strikeouts and earned a no decision.
Before the game, Miss Massachusetts, Taylor Kinzler, came out to Doyle Field to sing the national anthem and throw out the first pitch.
