Old Orchard Beach News Release
In the season opener of the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs inaugural season the team traveled to Connecticut to face the Torrington Titans. Ross Julian's homerun and a top of the eighth rally would not be enough for the Dirt Dawgs to come away with a win as they fell 11-6 to the Titans.
The Titans scored three in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter, Matt Cianci, who was hit by a pitch, found himself on third after an over throw at first to try and pick him off. Cianci scored on a grounder to short where short stop Shane Keddy got the out at first. With men on second and third, the Titans Ryan Plourde hit a shot to center field where the two men on base would come in to score for the Titans.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the second and top of the third the Titans found their bats again when Conor Bierfeldt and Aldo Ferrante scored on a single to center by Plourde. In the bottom of the fourth Cianci scored on a double by Ryan Zielinski. The next batter, Bierfeldt, expanded the Titans lead by hitting a two run homerun over the left field wall. Then in the bottom of the fifth Torrington scored two more runs on a hit a double to right by Jordan Serena.
When the top of the seventh came the Titans were feeling very comfortable with their 11 run lead. They had taken out pitcher Alec Palioca and put in Travis Landry. But the Dirt Dawgs were not lying down without a fight. With two outs, Vin Sharkey drew the walk. The next batter Matt Lerner was also walked which set Ross Julian up for a three run homerun over the left field fence.
In the top of the eighth, facing another new pitcher, Raphael Martinez, Shane Keddy got a one out single to start the rally. Jack St. Clair had a single that moved Keddy over to second. William Derosier, who was hit by a pitch, loaded the bases for Dan Gusovsky. Keddy scored on a ball that got away from the Titans catcher after a bad hop. Gusovsky drew a walk to re-load the bases. With two more walks in the inning came two more runs for the Dirt Dawgs.
Alec Palioca recorded a win for the Titans while starting pitcher Jeff Andersen took the loss for the Dirt Dawgs.
The Dirt Dawgs continue play tonight at home for their home opener where they will face the Pittsfield Suns at Doyle Field at 6:35PM.
