Huntsville Stars News Release
Huntsville, AL â Two of the Milwaukee Brewers' top prospects showed why on Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Ben Diggins handled the pitching, and Corey Hart provided the offense in the Stars' 6-1 victory over Birmingham. Diggins delivered seven shutout innings and Hart homered, singled and drove in three as Huntsville (9-7) beat the Barons (5-10) for the second straight night and pulled within ½ game of first in the Southern League West Division.
Diggins (1-1) recorded his first win with his third consecutive quality start. He allowed just four hits and one walk while blanking the Barons over seven frames. Diggins fanned eight, his personal high in the Southern League and two off his career high. Of the 87 pitches he threw, 62 were strikes, and Birmingham had only two runners in scoring position against him. Diggins lowered his already impressive earned run average to 1.46.
The Stars jumped in front, 1-0, after Krynzel tripled with one out in the first and J.J. Hardy scored him with a sacrifice fly. Hart took over from there, plating the Stars' second run with a single to left in the third. Hardy led off the fifth with a single, then Hart launched a Ruthian blast to left for a two-run homer, his first of the year. Hart finished 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and one run scored.
Corwin Malone (1-1) suffered his first loss, surrendering eight hits and five runs, four earned, with three walks and five strikeouts. Ryan Miller tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the Stars, and Matt Hammons pitched the ninth, allowing Darron Ingram's solo homer, his first of the year.
Huntsville lefty Derek Lee (2-0, 2.08) makes his second straight start in place of Ben Hendrickson, who has soreness in his right forearm. Righty Brian West goes for the Barons. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Joe Davis Stadium, with an Easter Sunday egg hunt for children 12 and under to follow the game.
