Dick Howser High School All Star Teams Announced
June 1, 2007 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL-The 2007 Dick Howser High School All Star team was announced last week. This year's game will take place at Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday, June 2nd at 2:35pm preceding the Jupiter Hammerheads - Ft. Myers Miracle Florida State League game. In keeping with the tradition of the annual game, the coaches of the area high schools selected the two teams. Each Palm Beach County high school head coach had the opportunity to nominate as many seniors from his team as he wished. Coaches then got together to vote on the make up of the teams with coaches not being able to vote for players from their own team.
This year's squads' feature a combined 44 players representing 19 area high schools. Coach Nick Franco of Santaluces High School, assisted by Bill Harvey of Spanish River High School, and Larry Greenstein of Park Vista, will lead the South squad. Coach Joe Russo of Palm Beach Gardens High School, assisted by Trent Pendergast of Seminole Ridge, and Russ Milliken of Forest Hill, will lead the North squad. A few of the notable players confirmed to the south squad include Park Vista pitcher Mike Rayl, Santaluces infielder Nick Krupa, and Palm Beach Central pitcher/outfielder Mike Gipson. A few notables confirmed to the north squad include Palm Beach Gardens pitcher Sean Koecheler, Forest Hill pitcher/outfielder Ethan Root, and Palm Beach Gardens outfielder/pitcher Andy Mee.
This is the 20th year of the event and the 7th year at Roger Dean Stadium. Players from the South squad will be outfitted in Florida Marlins uniforms and Jupiter Hammerheads hats while the North squad will be wearing St. Louis Cardinals uniforms and Palm Beach Cardinals hats. College and professional scouts are expected for the event. Players are set up in one of the stadium's locker rooms, with the players names above their locker, and clubhouse attendants handling the players pre-game and post-game needs.
The Roger Dean Stadium Advisory Board puts on the event. Chairman for the fourth consecutive year is local attorney Bill Pruitt. In commenting on the event, Pruitt said, "Whether this is the last time they will ever put on a uniform or are headed for college or professional careers, playing with a big league uniform on their back in this All Star game is a great experience. The kids are given the same treatment that the big league players get during spring training. Playing on a big league field, in a big league uniform-it's a great way to end a high school career." Said Stadium GM Rob Rabenecker, in commenting on the annual game, "Roger Dean Stadium is proud to host this annual event-what better way to promote baseball than a grassroots all star game such as this. The Cardinals and Marlins are very proud to be associated with the Dick Howser game-not only because of its namesake, former Major League player and manager and local resident Dick Howser-but as much because it is a local event with local roots and history."
Gates will open at 12:00pm on June 2nd. Batting practice and infield will take place before the 2:35pm game. The Hammerheads - Miracle game will follow at 6:05pm. Tickets can be purchased at the stadium box office for $7.99 + tax and can be used for both games.
