Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Lewin Diaz crushed his 12th home run of the season to back a strong outing from Jhoan Duran, as the Fort Myers Groupers opened a three-game series with the Jupiter Hammerheads with a 6-2 win on Friday night at Hammond Stadium.
Diaz's blast, a two-run shot, came in the bottom of the first inning and erased a 1-0 deficit.
Jose Miranda extended the lead to 3-1 with a solo home run in the fourth. Miranda has homered twice on the homestand.
Still leading 3-1 in the sixth, Ernie De La Trinidad pushed the lead to 4-1 with a run scoring single. Trey Cabbage followed with a two-run double. Cabbage was playing in his first game since May 24 (Suspended by team).
Jupiter scored a run in the ninth and put runners at first and second with two outs before Joe Record earned the one out save by striking out Riley Mahan. The save was the first of the season for the right-hander.
Duran (1-5) pitched seven innings. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits. He walked two and struck out four to earn his first win of the season.
The one night name change to Groupers paid homage to Southwest Florida's favorite fish.
The three-game series continues on Saturday night. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
