Florida Fire Frogs News Release
TAMPA, FL: RHP Miguel Yajure and LHP Philip Pfeifer kept hitters guessing all night, but it was the Tampa Tarpons who edged the Florida Fire Frogs, 1-0, in the series opener at Steinbrenner Field on Friday night.
Pfeifer came an out short of an official quality start, but he fanned a career-best eight men while giving up just three hits and a walk over 5 and 2/3's innings.
Yajure started for the Tarpons and shut down the Fire Frogs in six innings of work. He yielded two hits and two walks while also striking out a career-high 10 batters.
Tampa's bullpen followed suit behind Yajure, with LHP Trevor Lane and RHP Matt Wivinis blanking Florida over the final three stanzas. Lane (1-0) faced the minimum and racked up three Ks. Wivinis picked up his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The only tally of the game came in the seventh. Angel Aguilar and Welfrin Mateo swatted consecutive singles off RHP Walter Borkovich. During Mateo's single, Izzy Wilson airmailed a throw over third baseman Kevin Josephina that went into the dugout and forced in Aguilar for the winning run.
Despite allowing a run to come in on his throwing error, Wilson dazzled defensively all night. He robbed Steven Sensley of a home run in the second. He also made an incredible sliding catch on Diego Castillo's attempt to ignite a Tampa rally in the eighth.
Borkovich (2-1) was on the losing end of the decision, permitting just two hits and an unearned run with two strikeouts mixed in over four outs. RHP Sean McLaughlin tossed a scoreless stanza.
Riley Delgado extended his season-best on-base streak to 15 with a knock in the third inning. Brett Langhorne went 1-3 for the Fire Frogs.
NEXT UP: RHP Matt Hartman makes his first Advanced-A start on Saturday evening against RHP Jio Orozco (0-1, 6.23). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field.
