Diamond Dawgs Defeat Brewers in Doubleheader

As Yogi Berra said, it was déjà vu all over again.

Just like Wednesday night, the Utica Brewers and the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs met in a doubleheader, this time in Veteran's Memorial Park in Little Falls. Utica split that doubleheader with Mohawk Valley, winning the first game 4-3 in twelve innings and dropping the second, 5-2.

In Game 1, it started out as a pitcher's duel between Mohawk Valley's Ed Lewicki (Siena College) and Utica's John McGinty (Hartford) for the first few innings, with only four people reaching third base in the first three innings.

Unlike Wednesday night, however, Mohawk Valley would strike first in the fourth inning, as Eric Strano (Rider) hit a shot to right-center field for a 2-RBI double, scoring Michael Triller (Clemson) and Jayson Sullivan (Sacred Heart). Andy LaLonde (So. New Hampshire) would score Strano two pitches later on a laser beam right up the middle. The Brewers would face all nine Mohawk Valley batters in that inning as the Diamond Dawgs battered McGinty for four runs before they finally got out of the inning. McGinty would be pulled after the inning.

Utica got two of the runs back in the fifth inning, as Strano bobbled the throw from Sullivan on a hit by Adam Pexton (Utica College), allowing Niovel Ruiz-Diaz (Queensborough CC) to score from second. Pexton would score on a fielder's choice by Zac Hardy two batters later, but an unassisted double play by Greg Fazio (Rider) would leave the Brewers still down two and get Lewicki out of a bases-loaded jam.

Mohawk Valley would extend the lead back to four in the bottom of the fifth, as Sullivan lasered a ball past the Utica shortstop, scoring Gus Craig (Columbia). Strano would make up for his mistake in the top of the inning, as he would score Sullivan on a fielder's choice two batters later.

Lewicki would slam the door in the seventh, letting Reno Rankin get to third before getting the next three Brewers in order, upping his record to 2-0. McGinty would get the loss for Utica, dropping his record to 0-3.

In game 2, an unusual visitor appeared in the park before the game. A baby calf was brought in to Veteran's Memorial Park as part of the Diamond Dawgs' "Salute to Cows," promoting the dairy industry in New York State. Also, during the game as part of the promotion, a large ice cream sundae was made in the park to be enjoyed by players and fans alike.

Utica would strike first in the first inning as Hayden Kelly (Polk State) slammed a single to right field, scoring Joe Daru (NYIT). However, Diamond Dawg starter Mike DeCarlo (Herkimer College) would mitigate the damage to only one run in that inning.

Mohawk Valley would come roaring back in their half of the first, as Sullivan would bounce a ball off the wall in left-center, giving himself a double and scoring Colin Hawk (Cincinnati) and Zach Collett (New Haven). Utica starter DeShaun Hewitt (Louisburg) would face seven Diamond Dawg batters in the first before finally getting out of a second-and-third jam with a popup to first base to end the inning.

DeCarlo and Hewitt would settle down after that first inning, however, only allowing six baserunners between them for the next four innings.

After that, however, the Brewers would tie up the score in the top of the sixth inning, as Jabari Gayle (Northwest Florida State) would knock a solo home run to left-center field, his first of the season.

Mohawk Valley would get the run back in the bottom of the inning, as a passed ball by Mike Sinnott (NYIT) would score Collett to give the Diamond Dawgs a 3-2 lead. Matt Pidich (Pittsburgh) would come on in relief for the Diamond Dawgs in the seventh inning, and he would set the Brewers down in order to earn the save for Mohawk Valley. DeCarlo would get the win, evening his record at 1-1. Sinnott would get the loss for Utica, dropping his record to 1-2.

With the wins, Mohawk Valley extends their win streak to three games, raises their record to 20-12 and extends their home record to 13-6, while Utica is on a three-game slide and drops their record to 5-29 and their record away from Murnane Field to 1-18.

The Diamond Dawgs will continue their Patriot Bank Cup rivalry on Saturday as they head to Amsterdam to face the East division-leading Mohawks. These two teams will meet again back at Murnane Field on Sunday for the Brewers' next game.
