Devil Rays Extend Contract With Princeton Rays
October 20, 2004 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Princeton WhistlePigs News Release
The Princeton Devil Rays baseball team will continue to operate as the Appalachian League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at least through the conclusion of the 2006 baseball season as part of a two-year contract extension that was announced by the teams today (October 20, 2004).
"Obviously, we are pleased that professional baseball is going to remain in Princeton. There is most likely no team in this league that has put more first-time players into the big leagues (19 players) since May of 2001 than we have. We are proud in that respect to be part of such an active major league player development system," commented P-Rays General Manager Jim Holland in making the announcement. He added that the Princeton front office expects to maintain it's annual high quality line-up of promotions and giveaway gifts for fans at each of the team's 34 home games.
Professional baseball has operated at Princeton's Hunnicutt Field since 1988 and the summer of 2005 will mark Princeton's ninth season as an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Among current major league players who got their start in Princeton are outfielder Carl Crawford, the American League stolen base leader in both 2003 and 2004, standout 2004 playoff pitcher Brandon Backe of the Houston Astros, Gold Glove winner Pokey Reese of the Boston Red Sox, as well as Tampa Bay team members Rocco Baldelli, Doug Waechter, and Greenbrier East product Seth McClung.
