Devil Pitchers Combine to Four-Hit Bears

August 12, 2009 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release

YAKIMA, Wash. - Just one night after throwing their first team shutout against Boise, the Yakima Bears (18-33) get blanked by the Tri-City Dust Devils (30-21) 6-0 in the series opener in front of 1,352 fans at County Stadium Tuesday night.

Tri-City opened the game's scoring with an RBI single by Jeremiah Sammy in the fourth inning, which would be the only run Bears' starter Rafael Quezada (0-6) would allow. Quezada had his best outing of the season, going five innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five and walking one to take the loss.

The Dust Devils scored again in the seventh, as Kevin Clark stole home with two outs to extend their lead to 2-0. They would tack on three more in the eighth, capitalizing on an unusually wild Pedro Rodriguez's four walks, to put the game out of reach.

Craig Bennigson (6-3) tossed two scoreless out of the bullpen for his Northwest League-leading sixth victory of the campaign. Yakima was held to just four hits for the game. They came within sniffing distance of a run on a Matt Davidson pinch-hit single in the sixth, but Tim Sherlock was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second by Devils' center fielder Tim Wheeler.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday night at 7:05 for game two of the three-game set. Brad Wilson (2-0, 4.26 ERA) makes his first professional start for Yakima against Sheng-An Kuo (1-3, 7.38 ERA) for Tri-City. All 76 games can be heard on KUTI 1460 AM and are also available streaming via the internet at www.yakimabears.com. Yakima Bears single-game tickets, season tickets and seven new mini plans are on sale now at the new downtown Bears office at 17 N. 3rd Street, Suite 101 and online at yakimabears.com.
