Published on December 16, 2003 under NBA G League (G League) News Release
GREENVILLE, S.C, December 16 â Teams in the National Basketball Development League have been busy both on and off the court this holiday season. From delivering toys and food to sponsoring blood drives, the teams of the NBDL are actively doing their part to give back to the communities where they live and work.
While more continues to be done in each market, following is a sample of some of the ways that NBDL teams are exhibiting a spirit of giving and community this holiday season.
ASHEVILLE ALTITUDE
· Meals on Wheels. Altitude players and coaches visited Park Ridge Hospital to assist with a tree decorating fund-raiser. The decorated trees will be judged and the winner will receive $10,000 for their charity. The Altitude players assisted the Meals on Wheels charity to place ornaments at higher levels of their large tree.
CHARLESTON LOWGATORS
· Goodwill Angel Tree. The Charleston Lowgators are working with Goodwill Industries of the Lowcountry in distributing toys and gifts to those children represented on the Angel Tree at Midland Park Ministries. Goodwill helps supplement the needs of, and provides holiday gifts to, children of Goodwill clients who are disabled or disadvantaged.
COLUMBUS RIVERDRAGONS
· Rivvy Claus. The Riverdragons have purchased gifts which Rivvy D, dressed up as "Rivvy Claus", will present to a Ft. Benning Officer at a quarter break of the Dec. 20 game against Huntsville. These gifts go to needy families at Ft. Benning.
FAYETTEVILLE PATRIOTS
· Larry's Kids Celebration. Larry's Kids is a local charity that provides Christmas gifts (provided by public donations and charitable giving by stores) to children of lower income families. The event will be held in the Crown Coliseum Arena after the Patriots practice on December 23. Players, coaches, Sgt. Slam, and staff will mingle with the 240 children in attendance. This marks the third year that the Patriots have partnered with Larry's Kids.
HUNTSVILLE FLIGHT
· Toys for Tots. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new toys each year to distribute to needy children in hopes of motivating them to become responsible, productive community leaders. Flight players and staff are assisting the program by marking out barcodes and separating toys into categories of age and gender to be distributed to the children.
ROANOKE DAZZLE
· American Red Cross Donorama. The largest blood drive of the season is held at the Roanoke Civic Center where all Dazzle staff, players and coaches will appear. Media and radio sponsors will also be on hand. A Donorama T-shirt with the Dazzle's new logo will be given to all who donate blood.
