Detroit Shock News Release

Auburn Hills, MI. - In conjunction with the WNBA, the Detroit Shock announced today the launch of WNBA LiveAccess, a new feature on WNBA.com that will provide fans with free access to live game webcasts throughout the 2009 WNBA season.

"While there's no better way to experience the defending WNBA champion Shock than attending games at The Palace, our new online broadcast initiative allows fans to see all 17 home games and a majority of the team's road games live," said Detroit Shock Chief Operating Officer Craig Turnbull. "Combined with three national television broadcasts, fans can watch more live Shock games now than ever before."

During the season, the Detroit Shock, along with the majority of WNBA teams will utilize TriCaster, a portable live production and virtual set system, to stream select games from their arena, to a worldwide audience. The TriCaster technology used to create the live webcasts has already been proven in the NBA Development League the last two seasons, and provides a quality viewing experience by using existing cameras in each arena.

Fans around the world will be able to access live game webcasts on individual team web sites for the first time. Some blackouts of live games will apply. All WNBA LiveAccess games will be archived for on-demand viewing.

Overall, the extensive online offering will complement the WNBA's broadcast coverage, which includes live national telecasts of up to 29 regular season and postseason contests on ESPN2 and ABC and another 50 games on NBA TV. Selected games will also be streamed on ESPN360.com.

"This expanded offering of games is in response to the demand from fans who have requested an opportunity to see more of their favorite team's games and more games from around the league," said WNBA President Donna Orender. "The passion for the WNBA continues to expand around the globe, making it important to connect with our fans in-arena, on television and online. And with the level of play, the skill and athleticism in the WNBA at an all-time high, this is the perfect time to provide multiple platforms for our fans to experience our game."

The WNBA featured the first live video webcast of a game in women's professional sports history when WNBA.com streamed the Detroit Shock against the Charlotte Sting on May 31, 2003. Previously, the NBA became the first major professional sports league to webcast a live game when NBA.com streamed the Dallas Mavericks against the Sacramento Kings on April 13, 2001.
