Auburn Hills, MI - Detroit Shock Head Coach and General Manager Bill Laimbeer announced today that the team has signed free-agent guard Kristin Haynie to a contract. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
"Kristin has championship experience not only in the WNBA but also in college, " said Laimbeer. "She's a great teammate that will fit right in."
Haynie, a 5-9 guard, played in 33 games (three starts) last season with the Atlanta Dream, averaging 2.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 14.7 minutes per game. Her best game of the season came against Chicago on July 5, where she recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.
Haynie was originally selected by the Sacramento Monarchs with the ninth overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft and went on to win a WNBA Championship with the Monarchs that same year. She spent three seasons with the Monarchs before being acquired by the Dream in the 2008 WNBA Expansion Draft. The four-year veteran has career WNBA averages of 3.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 131 games. In 20 career playoff games, Haynie has averaged 4.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists.
The Mason, Mich. native played four seasons at Michigan State University. She averaged 21.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 6.1 steals her senior year helping the Spartans make it to NCAA National Championship game. Haynie remains MSU's all-time career leader in assists (574) and steals (346). She was the fourth player in Big Ten history to accumulate career totals of 1,000-plus points, 500-plus rebounds, 500-plus assists and 300-plus steals.
