(Southfield, Mich., January 19, 2007) - The Detroit Ignition (10-6) defeated the California Cougars (5-10), 18-8 for the first-year club's fifth consecutive victory in front of a sellout crowd of 3,677 at Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth, MI. The game-winning goal, a three-pointer, was scored by Ignition captain Novi Marojevic at the 1:35 mark of the second quarter. Detroit heads to Philadelphia on Saturday, January 20 for a showdown between the Major Indoor Soccer League's two top teams. The winner of Saturday's Ignition-KiXX contest will sit atop the League standings.
Miodrag Djerisilo started the scoring for Detroit with a three-point tally at the 1:23 mark of the opening frame of play to give the Ignition the 3-0 lead. Midfielder Ricardinho extended the Ignition lead to 5-0 with a two-point goal off a pass from defender Jonathan Greenfield at 5:01. Jamar Beasley added to his lead in League scoring with a two-point goal, giving him 23 on the season, to put the Ignition's lead at 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Ignition offense continued with a three-point power play goal off the restart just 1:35 into the second quarter of play from captain Novi Marojevic, giving the first-year club the 10-0 advantage. Ignition forward Chile Farias registered a two-point, restart goal at the 3:11 mark to place the Detroit lead at 12-0. California put their first two-points on the board with a goal from Bernie Lilavois at 3:49, bringing the Detroit advantage to 12-2. Beasley tallied a two-pointer, his second goal of the night, at 9:50 to bring Detroit's lead to 14-2. A two-point score at 11:10 by California midfielder and recent-acquisition Semir Mesanovic cut the Ignition lead to 14-4 at the end of the second quarter.
Farias put in his second two-point goal of the night at 7:26 of the third quarter to expand the Ignition lead to 16-4. The Cougars responded quickly with a two-pointer off the foot of midfielder Jorge Martinez at 7:39, bringing the first-year side's advantage to 16-6. Detroit defender Josh Rife scored his first goal of the season, a two-pointer; off a pass from Kyt Selaidopoulos at 11:19 to give the Ignition the 18-6 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The only goal of the fourth quarter, a two-pointer, was scored by Cougars midfielder Brian Farber at 14:44, giving the Ignition the 18-8 victory.

Ignition goalkeeper Sanaldo earned his fifth consecutive victory stopping 14 of 18 shots on the night...The Ignition's leading scorers were Jamar Beasley and Carlos "Chile" Farias, each tallying five points on the night ...The Ignition head to Philadelphia on Saturday, January 20 to battle the League leading Philadelphia KiXX at 7:05pm ET...The Ignition registered a team-record 18 blocks on the night.
