Detroit Hoops play HOT 102.7FM in benefit game

January 19, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Detroit Hoops News Release

Detroit, MI. This week, the ABA Detroit Hoops played a Pre-Inaugural basketball game against Radio One's HOT 102.7FM WHDT to get students at Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA) excited about this historical event in America with Barack Obama becoming the first African-American President.

The Detroit Edison Field House (Home of the Detroit Hoops) was packed as the students saw one of the most exciting basketball games filled with high flying dunks to start the new year. The Hoops defeated HOT 102.7FM, 86-82.

DEPSA held a raffle for one blessed student to win a trip of a lifetime to the historical inauguration. The raffle was won by a 7th grader who was very excited about this rare opportunity. The Hoops care about the community and after the Pre-Inaugural game against HOT 102.7 FM, both teams had a "Meet & Greet" with the students. Some of the Hoops players included Roderick Brown, Sean Mitchell, Robert Banks, Dwaynbe Williams and Katu Davis. The students were very excited to meet the players and really enjoyed the game.

Teaching drug prevention to our youth in Detroit is also a major mission of the Detroit Hoops organization. Because of that, the Hoops formed a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization called "Hoop Dreams Foundation." Hoops Dreams will be giving basketball camps over the summer and visiting schools throughout the year.

Hoop Dreams Foundation will provide drug prevention messages with the help of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) during the summer basketball camps and visits to schools throughout the year in the Metro Detroit area. If you would like for Hoop Dreams Foundation to speak at your school, please email gwatson@rhythmnsoul.com or visit www.thedetroithoops.com or www.abalive.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
