Detroit City FC News Release
Detroit, Michigan - There was a fall feel in the air at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday evening as Detroit City FC played host to Miami FC. This game would be crucial for both sides in the Push to the Playoffs, but it would be Detroit City walking away with the 2-1 victory.
Miami FC kicked off the game, but it was Le Rouge that would get the Keyworth faithful jumping early. A DCFC corner led to Brett Levis getting the ball at his feet and crossing it to Michael Bryant who headed the ball past the Miami keeper and Detroit was up 1-0 only two minutes into the game.
Detroit kept the pressure on as it was only four minutes later that Dario Suarez intercepted the ball at midfield and charged toward the Miami keeper, but the ball was shot just wide of the post.
Miami started their own charge to the net, as Christian Sorto ran in on the net after getting past a few DCFC defenders, but it was goalkeeper Ryan Shellow making an acrobatic save to keep the ball out of the net.
Not even a minute later, the same two faced off again and it was Shellow getting the upper hand once again with a sliding save to keep the score line at 1-0.
Shellow would come up clutch once again in the 40th minute making another key save on yet another Miami attack.
Detroit City went into the half with a 1-0 lead, while only having 37% possession throughout the half, but Detroit did hold a shot advantage, 6-2, as both teams went into the locker room.
The second half brought more of the same, as Miami controlled the possession, but Detroit had the better opportunities on the net.
A 54th-minute foul by Miami led to a Detroit free-kick opportunity from just about 30 yards out. A beautiful sequence of passes off the free kick led to Levis getting the ball at his feet and crossing it to Devon Amoo-Mensah who put it in the back of the net to double DCFC's lead. It was Levis' second assist on the night and Amoo-Mensah's second goal in two games.
Detroit conceded a handball penalty in the 75th minute that Miami converted and brought the score to 2-1 with only 15 minutes remaining.
Miami pressured the Detroit back line looking for an equalizer in the final 15, but they just couldn't get a consistent attack game going, as Detroit played lockdown defense.
The final whistle blew after a failed Miami free kick opportunity and Detroit would be walking away with all three points, with a final score line of 2-1.
With this win, Le Rouge moved into the final playoff spot with just six games remaining. Detroit will now travel West to Phoenix to face off against Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, September 16. Kickoff is set for 10:30 pm Eastern.
