Virginia Destroyers News Release
VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA (September 20, 2011) Virginia Destroyers running back DOMINIC RHODES, who rushed for one touchdown in his team's 23-13 victory over the Omaha Nighthawks last Thursday, is a co-winner of the UFL's Offensive League Player of the Week honor.
Sharing the award with Rhodes is Las Vegas quarterback CHASE CLEMENT, who completed 20 of his 28 passes for 233 yards with one touchdown on Saturday, leading the Locos to a 23-17 victory over the Sacramento Mountain Lions.
Locos cornerback MARQUIS FLOYD claimed the defensive honors. Sacramento Mountain Lions return specialist AARON WOODS was named UFL Special Teams Player of the Week.
Rhodes, Clement and Floyd will be on the same field on Saturday when Virginia hosts Las Vegas in a battle of unbeaten teams at 7 pm at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The game marks the debut of professional football in the Commonwealth.
Rhodes is the league's all-time touchdown leader with 11. He has scored at least one touchdown in eight of nine regular-season UFL games played.
The former Colts running back was also thrilled to receive the inaugural accolade of the season.
ÃÂ "I gave it my all, and all my linemen and teammates helped me," he said. "We got the win; that's the most important thing. I'm ready for Vegas now."
Rhodes set numerous UFL records with the Florida Tuskers during the 2010 UFL season, including single-season touchdowns (10), most consecutive games with a touchdown (seven), single-season rushing yards (551), single-season carries (127), single-season rushing touchdowns (nine) and most 100-yard rushing games in a season (three). He also caught 11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, and was second in the UFL in kickoff-return average (21.7).
"I have great admiration and respect for Dominic Rhodes," said Destroyers Coach MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER. "Everybody on our football team does as well."
ÃÂ Schottenheimer said Rhodes' work ethic continues to impress him in practice. Cones are set upÃÂ during drills, showing running backs how far they must run when carrying the ball. The distance varies every day.
ÃÂ "Dominic always runs the full 100 yards no matter where the cones are," Schottenheimer said.
During a six-year Indianapolis Colts career, Rhodes rushed for a game-high 113 yards and scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl XLI win over the Chicago Bears. He rejoined the Colts at the end of the 2010 UFL season and helped them to secure a postseason berth.
