Columbus Destroyers News Release
KANSAS CITY, MO - The Columbus Destroyers, presented by Germain, dropped their eighth contest of the season to the Kansas City Brigade 59-43 in front of 12,736 fans at Sprint Center Saturday night. The Destroyers fall to 2-8, including a 1-4 road record, in 2008.
Three costly turnovers that the Brigade converted into 21 points, a season-high 16 penalties for 95 yards and former Destroyer players proved to be a large part of the Columbus demise. Brigade defensive lineman Gillis Wilson, who played in the first game of this season for Columbus, was named Defensive Player of the Game after tallying two sacks. Former Destroyers' defensive back Jerald Brown intercepted Matt Nagy once and former Columbus kicker Peter Martinez scored a total of 11 points as he converted all eight point after attempts and tacked on a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Nagy finished 22-of-34 for 294 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. Derek Lee who was held scoreless in the first half finished the game strong with seven receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns. C.J. Johnson in his third game with the Destroyers, led all receivers with 127 yards on nine receptions and two touchdowns.
With the score tied 21-21 with a :56 seconds remaining in the first half, Nagy was sacked on fourth down by former Destroyers defensive lineman Gillis Wilson for a loss of six yards and the Brigade gained possession at the Kansas City 20-yard line as a result. Brigade quarterback D Bryant led his team on a five play, 26-yard drive that culminated in a four-yard touchdown pass to lineman Jamarr Ward. Columbus trailed at halftime 28-21.
With the score 35-21 in favor of the Brigade in the third quarter, Nagy found Calvin Russell for a 46-yard touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff the Destroyers kickoff team surrendered its first return for touchdown in 2008 as Jerel Meyers returned a 56-yard effort. Kansas City led 42-28 late in the third quarter when Nagy threw his fifth interception of the season to Brown.
The Brigade converted the Columbus turnover as Bryant found Meyers for a 13-yard touchdown to open the fourth quarter to give Kansas City a 49-28 lead.
Nagy threw his second interception of the game on the next Columbus drive. This marks the first time he has thrown two interceptions in a game since June 16, 2007 against the Philadelphia Soul. Brigade fullback Dawan Moss rushed in from four-yards to give Kansas City a commanding 56-28 lead with 8:47 remaining in the game.
Destroyers' wide receiver Derek Lee caught two touchdowns in the final stanza from eight and 18 yards respectively. Brigade kicker Peter Martinez nailed a 22-yard field goal to cap the scoring for the Brigade.
The Destroyers return to action next Saturday night as they face the Eastern Division leading Philadelphia Soul. Kickoff at the Wachovia Spectrum is set for 7 p.m. (ET).
