Destroyers fade in second half; drop 55-33 decision to Dallas

COLUMBUS, OH – Clint Stoerner completed three touchdowns passes in the third quarter that broke open a 27-27 tie at halftime and helped give the Dallas Desperados a 55-33 victory over the Columbus Destroyers before a crowd of 13,757 at Nationwide Arena Friday night.

Stoerner finished 21-of-28 for 239 yards and four touchdowns for Dallas (7-4-1). Jason Shelley led the Desperados with seven catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns, while Bobby Sippio and Deontay Wilson each pulled in touchdown passes.

Columbus (1-11) was led by Sedrick Robinson, who made seven catches for 80 yards with one touchdown. Damien Groce added six catches for 47 yards and one touchdown. The Destroyers failed to score in the third quarter.

Quarterback Scott McMullen, who made his first professional start, completed 21-of-44 passes for 208 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Columbus opened the game with McMullen completing a 13-yard touchdown pass to Groce. Dallas quickly answered on the ensuring kick with Will Pettis returning it 56 yards. The Desperados scored again on its next possession with Stoerner hitting Shelley across the middle from 12 yards out with 5:06 left, but Carlos Martinez missed the extra point. The Destroyers regained the lead with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Randall Lane to make the score 14-13.

The second quarter scoring began with a 28-yard field goal by Steve Videtich for the Destroyers. Dallas' Duke Pettijohn scored on a one-yard run with 5:39 left. Columbus scored next from 35 yards, this time McMullen to Sedrick Robinson. The Desperados would score a two-yard touchdown run by Ja'Mar Toombs before the Destroyers tied it with a 20-yard field goal to close the second quarter and make the halftime score 27-27.

Donvetis Franklin led the Destroyers' defense with seven tackles, with six unassisted.

The Destroyers remain at home, hosting the Austin Wranglers on Saturday, April 30. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two franchises.
