Despite 3 Hits, T-Yanks Manage to Split

TAMPA, Fla. - Their offense may have managed three total hits, but strong pitching helped the Tampa Yankees (28-24, 70-51) salvage a split of a doubleheader against the Clearwater Threshers (31-21, 70-50) on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbenner Field.

Follow a 7-0 Clearwater victory that featured two Tampa hits, the Yankees rebounded with a 1-0 win and only need one hit to do it.

Josh Rogers brought a personal three-game winning streak and 19.0-inning scoreless streak into his start in game one. The southpaw saw both streaks come to an end.

Jiandido Tromp began the game with a double into left field. Two outs later, Aaron Brown lined a first-pitch RBI single into center, giving Clearwater a 1-0 lead.

LHP Brandon Leibrandt (W, 2-1) retired the first 11 batters he faced and held Tampa to a hit and two walks in five scoreless innings, striking out five. Gleyber Torres became the first Yankee to reach base with a walk in the fourth. Connor Spencer broke the no-hitter bid with a one-out single in the fifth.

Tromp doubled again in the fifth and scored while Rogers made an errant throw after fielding a sacrifice bunt by Josh Tobias. Carlos Tocci followed by drawing a walk. One out later, Chace Numata hit an RBI double. RHP Andrew Schwaab entered in relief and allowed a sacrifice fly by Derek Campbell before retiring the side.

Rogers (L, 8-5) allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits in four and a third innings. The 22-year-old struck out three, walked one and threw 54 of 75 pitches for strikes.

Clearwater scored three more runs off Schwaab in the sixth. A walk and a single began the frame and Tromp followed with an RBI single. Two more scored on a double by Tobias, giving the Threshers a 7-0 lead.

Justus Sheffield (W, 2-0) started the second game and retired the first six batters he faced. The southpaw scattered three hits and a walk while striking out three in six scoreless frames. Sheffield threw 50 of 82 pitches for strikes.

Zack Zehner drew a walk to begin the bottom of the second. RHP Ranfi Casimiro proceed to walk both Spencer and Thairo Estrada, loading the bases with no outs. Devyn Bolasky grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, allowing Zehner to score what would be the only run of the game.

Casimiro (L, 8-9) allowed one earned run on three walks in four hitless innings, striking out a pair and throwing 31 of 61 pitches for strikes.

The Yankees did not record a hit until the bottom of the sixth when Wes Wilson legged out a broken-bat, infield single off of RHP Matt Hockenberry.

RHP Dillon McNamara (SV, 11) allowed a hit and a walk before getting Campbell to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play, preserving the win.

The series continues on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when RHP Yefrey Ramirez (2-5, 3.23 ERA) starts for the Yankees against RHP Shane Watson (4-5, 4.26 ERA) for the Threshers.
