Desperados to Hold Tryouts in Monterrey, Mexico
September 15, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release
The Dallas Desperados have put together a successful foundation in their first two seasons, making two playoff appearances and winning the Central Division title last spring. In their continuing effort to upgrade their talent level, the Desperados will hold tryouts in Mexico at the Tecnologico de Monterrey campus in November.
The first Arena Football League team to hold tryouts in Mexico, the Desperados will put some of the top American football talent from Mexico's collegiate teams through a 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle and standing broad jump. Selected players who meet predetermined performance standards will then be invited to participate in an elite workout later that day, where players will be evaluated in drills specific to Arena football.
The Dallas Desperados and the Dallas Cowboys have always considered Mexico important to the success of their teams, especially since the Dallas Cowboys rank #1 in sports team popularity among Hispanic fans.
"Traditionally, the Cowboys have always had a tremendous Hispanic following in the United States and Mexico," states Desperados President and General Manager Jerry Jones, Jr. "The great success the Cowboys organization has had in Mexico is evident by the two American Bowl games the Cowboys played in Mexico City against the Houston Oilers and Oakland Raiders, which are two of the largest attended games in NFL history. That speaks volumes to the passion for American football in Mexico."
"We think this is a unique opportunity as we evolve football into a year-round entertainment event through the channels of Arena football," continues Jones. "The Desperados holding tryouts in Mexico is precedent setting and is something that we look to grow in the future."
The Desperados' Mexico tryouts will be held on November 22 at the Tecnologico de Monterrey campus in Monterrey City. More detailed information on the tryouts will be coming in the near future.
