Desperados sign open tryout participant

January 14, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release

After going through the rigors of the Desperados open tryout on Oct. 25 and the subsequent callbacks, Gladston Taylor fulfilled the first part of his goal when he signed with the team as training camp started. Taylor – a 6-5, 275 point lineman - is now battling with 11 other linemen trying to fulfill the second half of his goal, which is to make the Desperados final roster.

Taylor has been out of football since finishing his collegiate career at Northwestern in 1999. In his final collegiate campaign, he totaled 15 tackles, three quarterback pressures, a sack and a tackle for a loss while playing in 11 games. He saw action in two games as a junior but did not record any statistics. After making the switch to tight end prior to his sophomore season, Taylor saw mostly special teams action in the eight games he played. He played in three contests as a redshirt freshman in 1996, posting one assisted tackle. Taylor was a SuperPrep all-region selection as a senior defensive tackle at Willowridge, TX, High School.

The Desperados also signed defensive specialist Carl Greenwood. Greenwood has spent the past four seasons in the Arena Football League with the New Jersey Gladiators (2002), Houston Thunderbears (2001) and Nashville Kats (1999-2000), accumulating 156 tackles, 31 passes defensed, eight interceptions, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Greenwood was originally a fifth round draft choice of the NFL's N.Y. Jets in 1995. He totaled 26 tackles and three pass deflections in two seasons with the Jets before being traded to Green Bay on June 5, 1997. He was released by the Packers at the end of the 1997 training camp.

In another transaction, the club released WR/DB Ty Tolbert. Tolbert spent the 2002 season on the Desperados practice squad and was attempting to make the team's active roster this spring.

The Desperados kick off the 2003 season on Feb. 2 by hosting the New York Dragons. NBC Sports – in their first season associated with the AFL – will televise the game, as well as up to 70 other AFL games throughout the season. Desperados season ticket packages start at $40 and can be ordered by calling 972-785-4900 or by visiting the Dallas Desperados website at www.dallasdesperados.com.
