Desperados Change Divisions for 2004 Season

October 9, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Dallas Desperados News Release

After claiming their first division title in 2003, the Dallas Desperados will not have the opportunity to defend their Central Division title as the Arena Football League has announced divisional realignment for the 2004 season. The Desperados – who competed in the Western Division in 2002 and the Central Division in 2003 – will compete with the Carolina Cobras, Columbus Destroyers, New York Dragons and the expansion Philadelphia Soul in the Eastern Division.

The Addition of Dallas and Philadelphia to the Eastern Division with New York emphasizes existing football rivalries as the division more closely resembles the NFC East from the National Football League.

The Desperados faced New York and Carolina last year, defeating the Dragons 60-56 in the season opener and the Cobras 47-43 in late March. Dallas owns 2-0 all-time records against both teams. The Desperados have never faced the Destroyers, who moved from Buffalo, NY, to Columbus, OH, this offseason.

The Arena Football League made the realignment announcement this morning after having to shift teams around due to the addition of three expansion teams – Philadelphia, New Orleans and Austin. In the new alignments, the Las Vegas Gladiators – who moved from New Jersey last year – move from the Eastern Division to the Western Division. The Colorado Crush moves from the Western Division to the Central Division, while the Detroit Fury move from the Eastern Division to the Central Division. The Carolina Cobras have moved from the Southern Division to the Eastern Division, and the Austin Wranglers and New Orleans VooDoo join the league as members of the Southern Division.
