Harrisburg, PA, February 6, 2015 - The Harrisburg City Islanders have transferred forward Robbie Derschang to the Arizona United SC of the USL PRO, the club announced today.
The 22-year-old Englewood, Colorado, native and former collegiate standout, began his professional career with the Harrisburg City Islanders in 2014, after being drafted by the Philadelphia Union in the second round (twenty-seventh overall) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.
"Robbie had a great rookie season for us and scored some big goals. He is a player that we hate to lose, but he wanted to get back to the West coast and we were able to work out a deal with Arizona." Islander's Head Coach, Bill Becher said.
Derschang leaves the Harrisburg City Islanders following a successful rookie campaign with the club. Marked by big plays that helped lead the number eight seeded team past number one seed Orlando FC to the 2014 USL PRO Championship match against number two seed Sacramento.
"It was a good season with the Islanders but now I'm on to the next chapter in my career." said Derschang.
Before being drafted by the Union, Derschang had an exceptional collegiate career at Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas, and Akron University, in Akron, Ohio. Derschang began his collegiate career at SMU, where he appeared in 27 matches and netted six goals, including two game winners. While at SMU, Derschang was selected to the Conference USA All-Freshman team and to Top Drawer Soccer's Freshman All-American team.
Following his sophomore season at SMU, Derschang transferred to Akron. While at Akron, Derschang was converted into a left back and excelled as a skillful attacker. During his two years with the Zips, Derschang appeared in 28 matches and netted four-goals and dishing-out two assists for one of the top ranked teams in the nation.
Derschang was traded to the Arizona United SC for an undisclosed amount.
The coaches, team, and front office wish Robbie the best with the Arizona United SC and thank him for all his contributions with the Islanders during his time here.
