Denver Cutthroats Win Game One of Finals

Denver - The Denver Cutthroats hosted the Allen Americans for the first game in the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Finals on Friday, May 2 at the Denver Coliseum. The Cutthroats took the lead in the team's first ever appearance in the final round of the CHL Playoffs with a 5-4 victory over the Americans. A.J. Gale recorded four goals on the night to notch seven in his last two games, the most in a two-game playoff stretch in over 10 years.

Cam Reid (Lee Moffie, Kent Patterson) scored the opening goal of the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Finals to give the Denver Cutthroats a 1-0 lead. Teammate A.J. Gale (Robin Soudek, Moffie) extended the Cutthroats lead to close out the opening period 2-0.

The Allen Americans made a strong comeback in the second frame to tie the score with three consecutive and unanswered goals. A.J. Gale (Garett Bembridge, Aaron MacKenzie) scored his second goal of the night just thirty-three seconds into the period. The Americans put their first goal on the board with a shot to the back of Denver's net by Jonathan Lessard (Anthony Maiani, Alex Lavoie). Anthony Maiani (Lessard, Jamie Schaafsma) scored the Americans second goal of the night. Jamie Schaafsma (Daniel Tetrault, Brian McMillin) evened the score at three with less than a minute remaining in the period.

A.J. Gale (Troy Schwab, Bembridge) notched his second consecutive hat trick on the post-season to give the Cutthroats a 4-3 lead. Gale (Schwab, Steve Kaunisto) found a slot to give the Cutthroats a two-goal lead over the Americans with his fourth goal on the night. Jamie Schaafsma (Bruce Graham) gave Allen their final goal in the game, but fell short to Denver. The Cutthroats took the series lead in the 2014 Playoff Finals with Friday night's 5-4 victory.
