Worcester, MA - The Worcester Red Sox were just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, but the one was the key hit in the game as WooSox catcher Jason Delay drilled an RBI double in the 7th inning to snap a 1-1 tie and give the Sox a lead that held up in their 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Bisons on Wednesday afternoon at Polar Park.

Worcester used five different pitchers in what amounted to their 31st "bullpen game" of the season to hold the Bisons to a lone 1st inning and even the series at a victory apiece. The WooSox are 19-12 when they use their bullpen to pitch a game instead of a regular rotation starter.

The crisp 2 hour & 32 minute victory in front of a matinee crowd of 7,008 on Wednesday put the Sox back on the winning track after they had dropped consecutive games for the first time since July 17 & 19. And, depending on results of other games later in the night, the WooSox will either be in 1st -place atop the International League or remain just a 1/2-game behind.

Delay's go ahead hit in the bottom of the 7th came after back-to-back walks to Vinny Capra (run) and Tsung-Che Cheng with one out. It also came after Delay made an outstanding play in the top half of the inning to cut down Buffalo catcher William Simoneit at the plate. After a Wyatt Olds pitch skipped away from Delay, the WooSox catcher was able to recover quickly and make a diving tag on Simoneit who was attempting to slide home with the potential go-ahead run.

John Brebbia, the newly-acquired veteran of nine years in the big leagues and a Sharon, MA native, made his first start and second appearance for the WooSox since signing as free agent. He would go 2-innings allowing a 1st -inning run on an RBI double by Buffalo SS Nick Goodwin with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Four relievers then held the Bisons scoreless over the final 7 innings of the game.

Hobie Harris was especially sharp working 3-innings giving up just 1 hit with 4 strikeouts. Tyler Samaniego was touched for 3 hits in his 1.1 innings but 4 strikeouts helped him escape unscathed. The win went to Olds (5-5) who went 1.2 innings. Angel Bastardo yielded a lead-off walk in the 9th but got the next three outs in a row to earn his 3rd save.

The WooSox had just four hits on the day, but all were doubles by four different players - Delay's game winner, Kristian Campbell, Mickey Gasper, and Braiden Ward. Ward's double came after Delay walked to start the 3rd inning and led to Worcester's first run of the game on an RBI groundout by Franklin Arias (0-for-2, 2 BB, RBI).

Game 3 of the series is tomorrow night (Thursday) at 6:45 pm at Polar Park. Jedixson Paez, up from Double-A Portland where he had just 5 walks compared to 56 strikeouts in his 49 innings, will make his Triple-A debut as the WooSox starter. Buffalo will send RHP Josh Stephan (6-5, 5.25) to the mound. The game is live on NESN+ and can be heard on NASH 98.9 FM.

It will be another one of the ever-popular Deuces Wild promotions at Polar Park when, during every Thursday Summer evening home game, fans can purchase $2 Hot Dogs (Coney Island and Hebrew Nationals), $2 12-ounce drafts of Coors Light and Masshole Light Lager, and $2 bottles of Polar water (the beverage deals run for seven days). It will also be Eye Health Awareness Night as well as Grafton and Gardner Town Takeovers, both presented by Rodenhiser.
