LAST TIME OUT
ALLENTOWN, PA (August 11, 2026) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders lost a 5-4 walk-off to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown on Tuesday night. Lehigh Valley scored three in the bottom of the ninth to take the series opener.
The RailRiders took a 1-0 lead three batters in against IronPigs starter Chuck King. Anthony Volpe and Jasson Domínguez reached on singles, and a bunt single from Max Schuemann staked SWB starter Alexander Cornielle to the early edge. Former RailRider Payton Henry hit a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the third, his fifth of the year, four of which were hit with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre over 48 games in the first three months of the season.
Oswaldo Cabrera's two-run, 401-foot blast in the top of the fourth recaptured the lead. It was the utility man's 13th of the season, giving him 51 runs batted in. Cornielle allowed one run on five hits over five innings for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The IronPigs narrowed the lead to 3-2 in the sixth with an RBI-double by Carter Kieboom. The RailRiders immediately answered again in the seventh when a Domínguez single plated Yanquiel Fernández for a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Kieboom walked, and Henry was hit by a pitch. Both were replaced by pinch runners. Keaton Anthony's single drove in Robert Moore to draw the IronPigs within one. A double from Gabriel Rincones Jr. scored Steward Berroa from third to tie the game and pinch runner Felix Reyes from first for the walk-off win.
Eric Reyzelman (1-2) was tagged with the blown save and the loss while Max Lazar (4-1) garnered the win.
NEWS AND NOTES
IN THE LEAGUE - Despite a loss last night, the RailRiders stay tied for first place in the International League alongside Indianapolis. They are just a half a game in front of Durham and Worcester. The RailRiders are 5-5 in their last ten games and 10 contests above .500 on the full season.
PAYTON'S PERFORMANCE - Payton Henry has been known to play well against the RailRiders, but it is his first time doing so as a former member of the team. Last night, he went 3-for-3 with a home run. Payton began the season with SWB after signing a free agent minor league contract back in December. He played 48 games with the RailRiders, hitting .224 and was a force behind the dish throwing out 20 runners stealing. Henry was granted his release on July 2 and re-signed with the Phillies after playing in their farm system last summer. The 29-year-old was selected to Philadelphia for his first time back in the big leagues in over 1,500 days. While he did not play in a game and was DFA'ed he still remains with Lehigh Valley.
AGAINST THE FELLOW - SWB has faced Iron Pig's starter Drake Fellows twice this season already. The RailRiders were able to get one run of him in a pair of innings on May 5 and then four runs in four innings on June 14. Ernesto Martínez Jr. hit a home run off the righty, while the team held an .308 overall batting average.
WELCOME HAYDEN - Righty Hayden Merda bolsters the RailRiders bullpen joining the team from Double-A Somerset. Merda has made 32 appearances this season for a 3.67 earned run average. In 41.2 innings of work, he walked just 21 batters compared to 67 strikeouts. Merda, 26 was drafted in the 17th round in 2022 out of Azusa Pacific University.
THE NUMBER 21 - The RailRiders add starter Xavier Rivas to their rotation, the Yankees #21 prospect. Rivas, 24, has pitched in 19 outings, starting 15 of them. In just 81.1 innings, the southpaw has struck out 114 batters compared to just 41 walks. Rivas was drafted by the Yankees in the 16th round in 2024 out of the University of Mississippi.
WILLING IT - Will Brian lowered his ERA to 2.55 in fifteen appearances with SWB. Last night, he did not allow an earned run through an inning and two thirds of work. It was his seventh consecutive scoreless appearance, marking 7.2 clean frames. In that time, the lefty has recorded just a pair of walks to seven strikeouts. Prior to his promotion, Brian held a 4.23 ERA in 21 outings with Somerset.
DUKE'S DASHING - Duke Ellis set a franchise record for Ellis as he eclipsed Nick Punto's 82 total swipes Thursday night. He recorded five on the week including one more on Sunday. Ellis reached 85 with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre through 156 games. Punto did so on 263 games. Ellis also now has 43 steals in this season which is second most in the International League. The RailRiders season record is 44 set by Tommy Barrett in 1989.
