Fairfield, CT (June 1, 2005)- The Baltimore Bayhawks select former Georgetown University defenseman and 2005 captain Brodie Merrill for their first pick in the 2005 MLL Collegiate Draft in Fairfield, CT.
Merrill, a native of Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, was selected as a First Team All-American this season for the Hoyas, and a two-time Tewaaraton Trophy nominee. He finishes his career at Georgetown ranked seventh on the all-time ground balls list with 176.
As the third overall pick in the 2005 Draft, he stands as the first defenseman to be selected, behind the first overall pick, M Kyle Harrison, and A Jed Prossner. Those players were picked up by the New Jersey Pride and the Philadelphia Barrage, respectively. The Bayhawks first defensive selection in the 2004 Draft, University of Maryland's Lee Zink, is currently one of the best defensemen in the league, holding MLL All-Time scoring leader A Jesse Hubbard to one goal in their first meeting, and holding him scoreless in their second.
At the number four overall pick, the Bayhawks' second first-round selection, Baltimore chose Johns Hopkins defensive midfielder Benson Erwin. Erwin has been a standout member of the Blue Jay's program since his freshman year, in which he played in all 14 games. He is also an alum of the Friends School in Baltimore, where he was a classmate and teammate of longtime friend Kyle Harrison.
The Bayhawks selected Johns Hopkins attackman Matt Rewkowski in the third round and Penn State defensive midfielder William Cutler in the fourth round to round out the 2005 MLL Collegiate Draft.
