Defenseman Matt Burke, future considerations swapped for high-scoring forward

BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Sea Wolves announced on Friday that they have acquired forward Mathieu Melanson from the Phoenix RoadRunners in exchange for defenseman Matt Burke and future considerations.

"Mathieu Melanson is going to add a lot of scoring punch to our forward unit," said Sea Wolves head coach Steffon Walby. "He's a guy that can make plays, go to the net, and finish. We're looking forward to having him in our lineup this season."

A native of Shediac, N.B., Melanson scored 58 points (28g, 30a) in 52 games with the Florida Everblades and two goals in two games with the Phoenix RoadRunners, as well as potting one goal in eight games with Manitoba of the American Hockey League during the 2007-08 season. The 6-0, 200-pound right wing began his professional career in the 2006-07 season with the Stockton Thunder, where he scored 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points in 17 regular season games, and added three assists in six Kelly Cup Playoff games.

Prior to turning professional, Melanson played four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Chicoutimi and Quebec, recording 106 goals and 132 assists for 238 points in 249 games. Melanson began the 2006-07 season with the Dalhousie University Tigers in Halifax, N.S., scoring three goals and 11 assists in nine games.
