Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Fort Worth- The roster for the 2002-03 Ft. Worth Brahmas grew by one Thursday morning with the signing of defenseman Jeff Washbrook to a contract.
Washbrook will be entering his third professional season when the Brahmas take the ice in October. Last year, he played in Holland for the Amsterdam Tigers. In 21 games played, he had 5 goals and 12 assists for 17 points. He also picked up a team and league leading 89 minutes in penalties. In his rookie season of 2000-2001, Washbrook played for three teams. He began the year with the Lake Charles Ice Pirates, skating in the Ice Pirates first 29 games and registering 2 assists and 31 penalty minutes. He then moved on to the Central Texas Stampede (where he played for Brahmas head coach Todd Lalonde) and totaled 1 assist and 9 penalty minutes in 5 games with Central Texas. After the Stampede franchise ceased operations in January of 2001, Washbrook went to Macon, Georgia and played in 4 games for the Macon Whoopee.
A 23-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Washbrook prepped for his pro career by playing junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League, the Northern Ontario Hockey Association, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
At 6'3", 225, Washbrook should bring some valuable size to the Brahmas blueline. Head coach Todd Lalonde is also hopeful that Washbrook will lend a little experience to the Brahmas youthful defensive corps.
"With his size, Jeff Washbrook could be a valuable player for us defensively. He's a big, rangy guy that can clear the crease for us. He's also a strong skater who knows how to move the puck. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in training camp and how he can help this team," stated Lalonde.
The signing of Washbrook gives the Brahmas seventeen players under contract for the 2002-2003 season. Kyle Reeves (RW), Chad Woollard (LW), Adam Davis (D), Ryan Rivard (LW), Chad Michalchuk (LW), Chad Grills (C), Joe Van Volsen (C), Jason Reesor (C), Jim Midgley (C), Justin Williams (F), Brant Somerville (D), David Fry (F), Darren Curry (D), David Bourque (D), Lee Jacobson (D), and Scott Roche (G) have already inked contracts this off season with Ft. Worth. Defenseman Justin Seaborg is also on the Brahmas roster as he has signed a tryout agreement with the club. Curry, Rivard, Midgley, Williams, Jacobson, Somerville, and Seaborg are all rookies on the Brahmas roster. Reeves, Grills, Van Volsen and Michalchuk will take four of the five CHL allotted veteran spots on the Brahmas roster for players with more than 260 professional regular season games played.
The Brahmas will begin their sixth season, and second in the CHL, on Friday, October 17, with a road game against the Wichita Thunder. Ft. Worth's home opener this season will be on Saturday, November 2, against the Indianapolis Ice. Season ticket and advertising packages remain on sale now.
