LAS VEGAS, NV - Monday, April 11, 2011 - The two-time defending United Football League champion Las Vegas Locomotives kicked off their 2011 open player tryouts on Saturday at Henderson International School in nearby Henderson, Nevada, and got a chance to look at 120 free agents.
"We had a couple guys with NFL experience out there, some were NFL starters, and these guys were excited to be out there playing football," said MIKE FASSEL, the Locos Director of Football Operations. "You might think that some of these guys would think that trying out is beneath them since they are established, but they were unselfish guys that just wanted to play football and were excited to be out there.
"We also had some young guys just out of college that were overlooked by other leagues and proved a lot to us on Saturday."
Fassel said three current Locos - cornerback Jameel Dowling, linebacker Ezra Butler and safety Nick Turnbull - were on hand to watch the tryouts and see the talent level that participated.
The two remaining Locos open player tryouts will be May 7 in Los Angeles, California, and May 21 in Phoenix, Arizona. Fassel said Saturday's tryout raises the level of excitement for those tryouts, in addition to the upcoming UFL Draft and free agency period.
"We are always pleasantly surprised by the level of talent at the tryouts," added Fassel. "There is always a wide range of talent, but the top players at the tryout always stand out and surprise us with their ability to make us better. The players had a blast as well. I overheard some of the players saying they can't wait until our Los Angeles tryout so they get another shot.
"This gives our personnel department a boost, since we are able to evaluate so many players at once, so we are very excited for our next two tryouts."
