Johnstown RiverHawks News Release
JOHNSTOWN, PA - On Friday night the defending league champion, the Canton Legends, came to the War Memorial Arena in Johnstown for the first game of the American Indoor Football Association 2007 season. Despite fighting back often the Legends were just too much for the Riverhawks securing a 60 - 46 victory.
The Legends were paced by stand-out quarterback Kevin Mason. The Syracuse University product threw for 5 touchdowns and added another with his feet on a 37-yard scamper that helped secure the victory for the Legends. The Riverhawks appeared to come out slow as Canton scored the first two touchdowns before Johnstown quarterback Weyland Davis found receiver Quenteen Robinson for a 35-yard touchdown. Canton answered immediately as Legend return man Deforest Hart returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards for the touchdown making the score 20 -7. The Riverhawks stormed back as Davis found receiver Michael Caputo for a 7-yard touchdown. Then on the kickoff the Riverhawks Eric Weaver knocked the ball out on the return where Trent Jones picked it up and scored knotting the score at 20. Canton then scored two touchdowns in the final minute of play earning a 33-20 halftime lead. The second half consisted of a flurry of counterpunches by both teams but Canton was always able to keep the Riverhawks at arms length.
Johnstown was led by receiver Robinson who had 113 yards on seven catches, three that went for touchdowns. Caputo added another two touchdowns on five catches for 35 yards. Quarterback Weyland Davis finished the evening 18 of 30 for 205 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. The Riverhawks' defense was lead by Trent Jones, who had six tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and two pass breakups. Defensive linemen Shawn Williams and Densville Saunders had the Hawks two quarterback sacks.
The Riverhawks must now regroup before facing the Huntingdon Heroes, the other team in last years Northern Conference Championship Game at the War Memorial this Friday Night at 7:05pm.
