Defenders Fall 6-1, Split Series With Portland
April 12, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
PORTLAND, ME- The Defenders came up empty in the final game of the series vs. the Portland Sea Dogs as they fell 6-1 on Easter Sunday and split the series 2-2.
It was a game filled with missed opportunities for both teams as they combined to strand a total of thirty six runners.
The Sea Dogs took an early 1-0 lead went RF-Bubba Bell went yard off of Defenders starter RHP-Jesse Foppert who lasted only two and a third innings, gave up three hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out four.
Connecticut manufactured a run in the third to tie the game at 1-1 when RF-Eddy Martinez Esteve grounded out up the middle to score C-Jackson Williams who drew a leadoff walk and was sac bunted over by SS-Brian Bocock. That would be all the action for the Defenders as they squandered opportunities in the fourth when they loaded the bases with one out and in the eighth.
A costly error by 2B-Brad Boyer in the fourth on a 1B-Lars Anderson ground ball allowed two Sea Dogs to score. Portland's C-Mark Wagner shielded Boyer's vision on the play which cost him to make a split second decision. Portland lead 3-1.
The Sea Dogs would get another solo shot from CF-Josh Reddick, his third straight game with a homer in the sixth and plate two more in the seventh on a 3B-Jorge Jimenez triple and SS-Iggy Suarez sac fly to make it 6-1.
Defenders reliever LHP-Ben Snyder suffers his first loss of the season after turning in two and two thirds innings of work while giving up two unearned runs off of one hit, walked two and struck out three. Portland's reliever LHP-Dustin Richardson picked up his first win on three innings of work and rendered only two hits while striking out five.
The Defenders travel to New Hampshire (Toronto) for a three game series to round out their seven day road trip. Connecticut will face LHP-Marc Rzepczynski tomorrow and have yet to determine their starter. Catch all the action starting with the Defenders Pre-Game Show at 6:20pm.
The Defenders season opener is April 16 vs. Trenton (Yankees). For more information or to order tickets, call the Box Office at (860)-887-7962 or purchase online at www.ctdefenders.com.
